Excursion Sights of Genoa
Behind the
sprawling port of Genoa lies one of the country's most interesting cities.
The evidence of past wealth and power is still visible in its many
monuments, great churches, countless palaces, lavish courtyards, and rich
art treasures. Departing the pier proceed through Via Gramsci to the old
eastern gateway, Porta Soprana, with its 9th century wall. Here you will
proceed to tour the old city on foot. Beginning at Porta Soprana, the same
as it was when Christopher Columbus passed through it on his way to the
sea, walk to the house of Genoa's most famous citizen. The house was
rebuilt during the 18th century on the ruins of a formed building owned by
the navigator's father. Continue to the Piazza San Lorenzo where you will
come to the magnificent black slate and white marbles façade of the San
Lorenzo Cathedral. For many centuries it was the scene of the principal
acts of both church and state. Entering the Cathedral you will be
impressed by the size of the interior and the richness of its design.
Renaissance frescoes depict moments in the life of St. Lawrence, to who
the cathedral is dedicated. Following your visit, pass the church of San
Mateo en route to De Ferrari square and the recently restored Ducal Palace. Built in 1590 on 11th century
foundations, this palace was the
seat of Genoa's maritime republic. An extensive 17-year restoration was
completed for the 1992 celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Columbus'
discovery of America. It has been restored to its former glory. Reboard
your coach and continue through Via Fieschi to the International
Exhibition Palace. Proceed to Via XX Settembre Genoa's main thoroughfare
commemorating the liberation of the city by Italian troops on September
20, 1870. You will enjoy some free time before returning to the ship. Note: There
is a considerable amount of walking on this tour. Comfortable walking
shoes are recommended. Order of tour may be reversed.
Shore Excursion
Tigullio Gulf & Portofino
Depart from
the Maritime Station and journey along the panoramic coast with
spectacular views passing the beautiful fishing villages of Bogliasco and
Recco up to the resort town of Rapallo. This ancient city is one of
Europe's most renowned resorts. From here, embark your motor launch for
the 20 minute ride to Portofino. Known as "the Pearl of the Riviera", this
tiny spot is famous for its unspoiled charm and romantic land and
seascapes. High above the village is the imposing Castle San Giorgio.
Enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the island and surroundings from
this fortress, built in 1557. Its little church dedicated to St. George is
reputed to contain the relics of the Saint. You will have time to explore
the narrow streets, shops and cafes around the main square. Reboard your
motor launch for the return to Rapallo, where a delightful lunch will be
served. Following, you will have time to explore this city's 15th and 16th
century monuments or perhaps shop for some exquisite lace, before
returning to Genoa and the ship. Note: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. |
